S3 / MinIO

Since 2006Object storage

Object storage — S3 for cloud, MinIO for self-hosted S3-compatible storage in air-gapped environments.

Overview

S3 is ubiquitous — file uploads, static assets, backups, data lakes. I use AWS S3 for cloud and MinIO for self-hosted. Lifecycle policies, versioning, replication, presigned URLs for direct frontend uploads.

Use Cases

  • File uploads
  • backups
  • static assets
  • data lake
  • dev mock S3
  • air-gapped storage

Advantages

  • Industry-standard API
  • highly durable
  • MinIO for self-hosted
  • lifecycle management
  • versioning
  • encryption

Considerations

  • Egress costs (S3)
  • MinIO needs management
  • eventual consistency for some ops
